The Butterfly Effect – How a great drama is helping transgenderism to be more fully understood

“Ordinary people put into an extraordinary situation” – Butterfly’s DOP uses Picture Canning’s Leica Summilux-C Primes to get to the emotional core of this powerful transgender tale

In Butterfly, an extraordinary transgender tale, which begins this Sunday, October 14th, Anna Friel, once again, proves she is no ordinary actress. The Royal Television Society award-winner leads ITV’s latest landmark series with a must-see performance.

The three-part TV mini-series is written by Tony Marchant, the award-winning playwright behind BBC’s Public Enemies and The Secret Agent, and was shot with one of Picture Canning’s full 12-lens sets of Leica Summilux-C Primes by DOP, Si Bell.

Butterfly revolves around an eleven-year-old transgender child, Max, who identifies as a girl and wants to live life as Maxine. The story was based, in part, on the real-life tale of Susie Green, 50, from Leeds, whose own daughter Jackie – born Jack – asked to live as a girl while she was still at school. At 16, Jackie had gender affirmation surgery in America, becoming the youngest person to ever do so.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Butterfly’s DOP, Si Bell, used Picture Canning’s compact, lightweight and self-contained ARRI Alexa Mini and Leica Summilux-C Prime lenses to bring this powerful new domestic drama to life.

“The Leica Summilux-C Primes have such a raw cinematic feel, the optical quality is so high that they have a beautiful soft three-dimensional look. Summilux-C Primes are perfect for photographing actors – especially in story like Butterfly, where the smallest facial gesture can betray an entire depth of hidden meaning. Their exceptional low-light performance is unbeatable when it comes to shooting scenes in subtly-lit domestic interiors,” said Bell

As Picture Canning’s Bookings Manager, Natasha Larkin, says, “At Picture Canning we are very proud to have supplied the ARRI Alexa Mini and the full 12-lens set of Leica Summilux-C Primes which have helped Si deliver the emotional truth behind some exceptional acting performances. Because prejudice around transgenderism and the transgender community is a really important and, until recently, mostly ignored social issue.”

In the three-part series Vicky (Friel) is separated from Maxine’s father, Stephen (Emmett J Scanlan), and the two are fundamentally divided on what they think is best for their child.

“It’s basically a drama about ordinary people put into an extraordinary situation,” the former Hollyoaks actor, Scanlan, told Entertainment Focus.

Ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Isn’t that what great drama has always been about?
